Search and Reflect

Today, and for the next few weeks, we will work on some of John Stevens’ exercises. These are not “compositions” as such, but rather a means of getting improvisational activity started, which can then go off in any direction. John created them throughout the years in his practice with musicians such as Evan Parker and Derek Bailey. Later he collected them in a volume for the Open University, Search and Reflect (1985).

Hi Mick, AIM Toronto regularly organizes improv workshops using different approaches, from, say, Zorn's Cobra to some devised by AIM members; Search and Reflect seems to be the one we use the most. They are very well thought out exercises; the problems they pose appeal to musicians. We'd love to hear about your experience. Please contact us at improvpool a t gmail d o t com.
